Break a Complex Task Into Parts

Ask students to identify smaller tasks, decide an order, and assign responsibility. This works for research, lab procedures, writing, performance, and design.

Compare examples, sort evidence, identify repeated structures, and describe the rule that connects them.

Algorithms

Make Thinking Visible

Represent a process with steps, arrows, diagrams, or blocks. Then test whether another person can follow it.

Treat Revision as Normal

Notice what happened, compare it with the goal, change one part, and test again. Use this language across subjects to build persistence.

A 25-Minute Practice Activity

Choose a familiar classroom process. In small groups, write an exact set of instructions, exchange it with another group, and follow it literally. Mark unclear steps, missing information, and assumptions. Revise the process and test it again. Close by naming the decomposition, algorithm design, and debugging that occurred.
