Start With an Algorithm

Choose a familiar task and write precise instructions for completing it. Test the instructions with a partner and identify hidden assumptions.

Explore Sequence and Events

Sequence controls the order of instructions. Events tell a program when to begin an action, such as when a button is selected or a sensor changes.

Use Loops for Repetition

Find actions that repeat and replace the repeated instructions with a loop. Compare which version is easier to read and change.

Make Decisions With Conditionals

Use if/then thinking to describe how a program responds when a condition is true and what happens when it is not.

A Helpful Teaching Cycle

Use the same four-part rhythm repeatedly: predict what the code will do, run it, explain the result, and revise. Asking learners to explain one change often reveals more understanding than asking them to finish quickly.
