Gather these materials
- Soft carving foam or erasers
- Pencils
- Craft sticks or wood blocks
- Washable ink pads
- Paper
- Baby wipes
Preparation
Before participants begin
Cut carving material into manageable pieces and prepare sample designs that use bold shapes and wide lines. Test each carving material with the available tools before the session.
Use blunt tools with younger participants. If carving blades are introduced for older learners, provide direct adult supervision and a designated cutting surface.
Build Guide
Follow the steps
Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.
1. Plan and prepare
Sketch several bold designs on paper, then choose one that will remain clear at stamp size.
2. Build the foundation
Transfer the design to the soft material. Remember that the printed image will appear reversed.
3. Add the main feature
Press or carve away the areas that should remain unprinted. Keep important lines thick.
4. Test and adjust
Attach the finished material to a block if it needs a firmer handle.
5. Finish and reflect
Ink the stamp with light, even pressure and make a test print. Refine the surface, then build a repeating pattern.
