Gather these materials

  • Cardboard
  • String
  • Wooden dowels or craft sticks
  • Brass fasteners
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch

Preparation

Before participants begin

Prepare body-part templates, punch a sample set of joint holes, and build a simple cross-shaped controller.

Provide appropriate cutting tools and trim sharp cardboard corners. Supervise long strings and do not wrap them around the body.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Sketch a character as separate head, body, arm, and leg pieces.

2. Build the foundation

Cut out and decorate the pieces, then punch holes where the joints will move.

3. Add the main feature

Connect the body parts loosely with brass fasteners so each joint pivots.

4. Test and adjust

Tie strings to the hands, head, and other useful control points.

5. Finish and reflect

Attach the strings to the controller, adjust their lengths, and test how each hand movement changes the puppet.
