Gather these materials
- Sandwich cookies
- Plastic knives or craft sticks
- Napkins
- Moon-phase chart
- Paper plates
- Labels or markers
Preparation
Before participants begin
Check food allergies and facility rules. Prepare a non-food option with paper circles or modeling dough.
Use clean surfaces and utensils, wash hands, and follow allergy guidance. Separate models used for display from food intended to be eaten.
Build Guide
Follow the steps
Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.
1. Plan and prepare
Place eight cookies around the edge of a plate in a circle.
2. Build the foundation
Use the chart to identify the order of the major lunar phases.
3. Add the main feature
Twist each cookie open and shape the light filling to match one phase.
4. Test and adjust
Arrange and label the sequence from new Moon through the cycle and back toward new Moon.
5. Finish and reflect
Use a light source and a small ball to explain that phases come from changing viewing angles, not Earth’s shadow.
