Gather these materials

  • Paper
  • Drinking straws
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Markers
  • Paper clips for optional weight

Preparation

Before participants begin

Create a clear launch lane and mark a start line. Prepare paper tubes that fit loosely over the available straws.

Launch only toward an open area and never toward a person. Each participant should use a personal clean straw or a separate launcher sleeve.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Wrap paper loosely around a straw to form the rocket body and tape the seam.

2. Build the foundation

Seal the front end completely so air cannot escape.

3. Add the main feature

Add small fins near the open end, keeping them even and aligned.

4. Test and adjust

Slide the rocket onto the straw, aim down the clear lane, and blow once to launch.

5. Finish and reflect

Measure the result and revise one feature such as fin size, body length, or nose weight.
