Gather these materials

  • Beads in two contrasting colors
  • String or elastic cord
  • Binary reference charts
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Optional spacer beads

Preparation

Before participants begin

Prepare a clear character chart and sample bracelet. Pre-cut cord and tape one end to the table or a tray.

Beads are small objects. Use trays to contain them and choose larger beads for younger participants.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Choose one or more initials and locate each character on the binary chart.

2. Build the foundation

Assign one bead color to 0 and another to 1. Record the color key.

3. Add the main feature

Lay out the beads for the first character before threading them.

4. Test and adjust

Add a spacer bead between characters, then continue until the message is complete.

5. Finish and reflect

Check the pattern against the chart, adjust if needed, and tie or secure the cord.
