Gather these materials

  • Borax
  • Hot water
  • Heat-safe jars or cups
  • Pipe cleaners
  • String
  • Pencils or craft sticks
  • Measuring tools

Preparation

Before participants begin

Choose a well-ventilated, staff-managed mixing area. Label containers and prepare a location where jars can remain untouched while cooling.

An adult must handle hot water and mix the solution. Avoid skin and eye contact, do not taste materials, wash hands afterward, and keep the project away from food preparation areas.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Bend a pipe cleaner into a compact shape that fits inside the jar without touching the sides.

2. Build the foundation

Tie the shape to a string and suspend it from a pencil resting across the jar opening.

3. Add the main feature

With adult help, dissolve borax into hot water until additional powder no longer dissolves easily.

4. Test and adjust

Lower the shape into the solution and place the jar where it will not be disturbed.

5. Finish and reflect

After crystals form, lift the shape out, let it dry over a protected surface, and record observations.
