Get Ready

Supplies and preparation

Supplies

Gather these materials

  • Cardstock
  • Foam or carved stamps
  • LEGO plates and bricks
  • Washable ink pads
  • Markers
  • Glue sticks
  • Scrap paper

Preparation

Before participants begin

Fold cardstock, organize printing stations by color, and make a few LEGO texture plates. Provide scrap paper for test prints.

Use washable, non-toxic ink. Keep small building pieces away from very young participants and clean ink from hands before leaving.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Choose a recipient or message and plan a simple color palette.

2. Build the foundation

Test several stamps and LEGO textures on scrap paper.

3. Add the main feature

Print the largest shapes first, then add smaller repeated details after the first layer dries.

4. Test and adjust

Add a cut-paper layer, handwritten message, or drawn details.

5. Finish and reflect

Open the card, complete the inside message, and allow the finished print to dry flat.

Keep Exploring

Try another direction

Use one of these extensions after the first version is working.

  • Create a border from one rotated stamp.
  • Use two colors to show how overlapping prints create a third area.
  • Design a card that communicates only through shapes and symbols.
