Gather these materials

  • Prepared paper pulp
  • Water tubs
  • Screens or deckle frames
  • Sponges
  • Towels or drying racks
  • Optional flower petals or thread

Preparation

Before participants begin

Prepare pulp in advance, protect tables and floors, and set up a wet station and a separate drying station. Test the screen size and pulp concentration.

An adult should operate any blender used to make pulp. Clean water spills promptly and do not place non-paper material into plumbing.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Stir the pulp so the fibers are evenly suspended in the water.

2. Build the foundation

Submerge the screen, hold it level, and lift slowly to collect an even layer of fibers.

3. Add the main feature

Let excess water drain, then place the screen over a towel.

4. Test and adjust

Press gently with a sponge to remove more water and transfer the sheet from the screen.

5. Finish and reflect

Add optional flat decorations, cover with another towel, press, and leave the sheet to dry completely.

Use one of these extensions after the first version is working.

  • Compare sheets made with thick and thin pulp mixtures.
  • Embed thread, flat petals, or small paper shapes.
  • Use the finished paper for a card, print, or small bound book.
