Gather these materials

  • Quilling paper strips
  • Toothpicks or quilling tools
  • Craft glue
  • Cardstock
  • Tweezers
  • Small glue trays

Preparation

Before participants begin

Cut consistent paper strips if pre-cut materials are unavailable. Prepare samples of loose coils, tight coils, teardrops, and marquise shapes.

Use blunt tools with younger participants and apply glue in very small amounts.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Wrap one paper strip around the tool to form a coil.

2. Build the foundation

Slide the coil off, let it loosen to the desired size, and glue the end.

3. Add the main feature

Pinch one or more sides to turn the circle into a teardrop, leaf, eye, or square.

4. Test and adjust

Arrange several pieces on cardstock before gluing anything down.

5. Finish and reflect

Glue each piece in place and add lines or additional shapes to complete the composition.
