- Cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue sticks
- Markers
- Pop-up templates
- Rulers and pencils
Preparation
Before participants begin
Fold card bases in advance if time is limited and prepare examples of box, V-fold, and layered pop-up mechanisms.
Use age-appropriate scissors and keep glue away from the folds that need to move.
Build Guide
Follow the steps
Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.
1. Plan and prepare
Choose a message or scene and make a quick sketch of the open card.
2. Build the foundation
Select one simple mechanism and mark its cut and fold lines on scrap cardstock.
3. Add the main feature
Cut only the solid lines and crease the fold lines carefully.
4. Test and adjust
Attach the mechanism inside the card, checking that it closes flat before the glue dries.
5. Finish and reflect
Add lightweight artwork and test the opening motion several times.

Use one of these extensions after the first version is working.
- Combine two mechanisms at different depths.
- Create a pull tab or rotating paper element.
- Design the outside cover to hint at the scene inside.
