Gather these materials
- Pre-mixed salt dough
- Rolling pins
- Leaves, shells, small figures, or other textured objects
- Wax paper or placemats
- Toothpicks or skewers
- Paper towels
Preparation
Before participants begin
Mix the dough before participants arrive and divide it into individual portions. Wash and dry natural objects. Protect the work surface and decide whether pieces will air-dry or be baked later by an adult.
Use only clean, non-sharp objects. An adult should manage any oven drying. Remind participants that the dough is a craft material and should not be eaten.
Build Guide
Follow the steps
Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.
1. Plan and prepare
Place a portion of dough on wax paper and roll it into a disk about 1/2 inch thick.
2. Build the foundation
Arrange one or more objects on the surface and press firmly without cutting through the dough.
3. Add the main feature
Lift each object straight up to reveal the impression. Try a second arrangement if the first impression is unclear.
4. Test and adjust
Add a name, date, border, or small details with a toothpick. Make a hanging hole before drying if desired.
5. Finish and reflect
Move the piece on its wax paper to a drying area. Air-dry fully or have an adult bake it using the dough recipe’s directions.
