Get Ready

Supplies and preparation

Supplies

Gather these materials

  • Clean socks
  • Felt scraps
  • Googly eyes
  • Yarn
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Markers and lightweight decorations

Preparation

Before participants begin

Prepare small containers of materials and create examples with different eye, mouth, and hair placements. Use fast-setting craft glue when possible.

Provide age-appropriate scissors. An adult should operate hot glue if it is needed; participants should use cool craft glue.

Build Guide

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Place the sock on one hand and mark where the character’s eyes and mouth naturally sit.

2. Build the foundation

Choose a personality, expression, and color plan before attaching pieces.

3. Add the main feature

Cut felt shapes for the mouth, tongue, ears, or clothing.

4. Test and adjust

Glue the largest pieces first, then add eyes, yarn, and small details.

5. Finish and reflect

Let the puppet dry, name the character, and practice a short introduction in its voice.

Keep Exploring

Try another direction

Use one of these extensions after the first version is working.

  • Create two characters with contrasting personalities.
  • Build a simple cardboard setting for a short scene.
  • Write three prompts that help the character tell a story.

Facilitator Note

Make the process visible

Ask participants to predict what will happen, test one change at a time, and explain what they revised. Photograph early and final versions so the improvement process becomes part of the project story.
