Gather these materials

  • Plastic or paper straws
  • Connectors, pipe cleaners, or tape
  • Base plates or cardboard
  • Optional challenge prompts
  • Small test weights

Preparation

Before participants begin

Cut some straws into shorter lengths and prepare connector choices. Establish a consistent way to measure height and test strength.

Cover or trim sharp straw ends and keep structures below face level while actively building.

Follow the steps

Test as you build. Small revisions are part of the process and help participants understand why the final design works.

1. Plan and prepare

Choose a goal such as tallest tower, strongest bridge, or most unusual stable shape.

2. Build the foundation

Sketch a simple plan and identify where triangles could add strength.

3. Add the main feature

Build a wide, stable base before adding height or span.

4. Test and adjust

Test gently by tapping the surface or adding a small weight.

5. Finish and reflect

Identify the weakest connection, reinforce it, and repeat the test.
